GLAD/SIOP Let Me Know Your Thoughts
by Julie on Feb 08 2010 2:53 PM
I am desperate for “user” reviews from those practicing GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) strategies and/or SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol). I’m looking for a model that teachers (especially 7-12) can use in their classrooms to deliver content in a comprehensible manner for their ELL's. I’m hoping to find something that isn’t too cumbersome and time intensive, so that teachers actually implement what they've learned. Both of these trainings are expensive, but if they’re going to give me the bang for my buck that I’m looking for AND teachers will use on a consistent basis, it’s well worth the money. If anyone knows of any other tools that are available to Middle and High teachers to support their ELL’s on a consistent basis, please share.
Thanks!

Re: GLAD/SIOP Let Me Know Your Thoughts
I am not familiar with GLAD but New Jersey is using SIOP and content area teachers are being trained at local universities. It is time intensive (about 8 days) and expensive. But it has been very successful.
You might want to consider a less expensive professional development provider who does training that is similar to SIOP.

Is SIOP apart of the ESL course work or is it a separate training? How can one go about getting SIOP training if they want to be familiar with the process? Thank you!

This is what I've found as far as SIOP training...does anyone know of other training providers for SIOP besides Pearson Education?

It was Center for Applied linguistics (CAL.org) that developed SIOP and they provide training for SIOP.
Also they are many independent providers of instruction for classroom teachers that is not SIOP but uses the same strategies.

Northern Illinois University teaches it in their ESL course on content.

One book I found fantastic for explaining this was: Making Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners: The SIOP Model - Jana Echevarria
It has many examples of what a lesson using the SIOP method would look like, what the same class would look like without using the method, and examples of in between. You could just show teachers a sample from the book of a lesson using it. You can buy it on Amozon for $00.38 plus tax. (I just bought my second copy to lend out to regular teachers of my ELL students. It gives samples of different levels.

Hi
In response to "...any other tools that are available to Middle and High teachers to support their ELL’s on a consistent basis, please share..."
Please take a look at my work on LessonWriter.com
On the site, any teacher can copy and paste any content and it will automatically analyze the text for literacy and ESL teaching point and create standards-based lessons and lesson plans in a few minutes. The differentiation features allow the material to be presented thousands of different ways for different students, and include sheltered-instruction options. It's simple, fast, and free.
This 3-minute video shows a lot: http://www.lessonwriter.com/Training/introduction/introduction.aspx
TEAM, our lesson sharing, collaboration, and communication tools, are introduced in this video: http://lessonwriter.com/Training/NoAdminLeftBehind/NALB.aspx
The prices are very reasonable, but even better they are free when your school receives our Professional Development training.
Hope you like it

Sorry we can't help you. EverythingESL.net is a site for teachers of English language learners. We don't provide English lessons.

Re: GLAD/SIOP Let Me Know Your Thoughts
I am both a GLAD and SIOP trainer. GLAD training consists of 2 days of theory and research and 4 days of in class demonstration. It is the most powerful professional development I have ever participated in. You can get more info on the website ProjectGLAD.com. The training is spendy- $1025 per participant. SIOP training can be done in 3 days. There are 8 components and 30 features in a lesson planning format. The beauty of both these models is they incorporate many research based strategies but the underlying theme is academic English language development.

Re: Re: GLAD/SIOP Let Me Know Your Thoughts
Do you do SIOP training through Pearson, or independently? If inde, do you have a website? It is your experience that less than thrilled high school teachers respons better to SIOP than GLAD??

Dear Julie,
Contact me and I can help you out! Your secondary teachers will be more open to SIOP than GLAD. While GLAD has many wonderful strategies popular with high school, it is a great deal of planning to produce a GLAD unit. They can learn strategies through the book, Getting it All Together, by Marcia Brechtel. For SIOP, contact me and we can chat. 775 250 6411

Re: Re: Re: Re: GLAD/SIOP Let Me Know Your Thoughts
I am also a GLAD and SIOP trainer and agree that both are powerful. But I believe that as many high school teachers connect with GLAD as they do with SIOP. Most content area teachers at the high school level are already teaching units of study and the GLAD model becomes an easy but powerful way of teaching these units. While they are a bit labor intensive to develop most teachers are willing to put the work in once they see the power of the model during the training. I find SIOP to take just as much work it is just spread out instead of frontloaded.
